Vancouver in the twenty-second century is a city of stark contrasts, divided between its prospering Guild citizens and the starving descendants of American refugees who fled ecological catastrophe and political chaos decades ago. Newcomer Klale Renhardt is struggling to survive on the half drowned, ungoverned island of Downtown, where every type of trade is controlled by tongs or gangs. When she finds a job through Toni, the tough, beautiful American bartender at the famous KlonDyke nightclub, Klale finally allows herself to feel safe--until she hears that Toni may have been a torturer for the tongs.

Even more disturbing is Toni's strange connection with Blade, the giant, bio-altered slave of Downtown's most feared blackmailer. Klale fears the rage that simmers behind the giant's eyes, but when she attracts the vengeful attention of a hidden enemy, Blade may be the only person who can save her.

Blade's psyche has been so profoundly twisted by neural implants that he doesn't even realize he's human.

It has nearly left me speechless. I picked it up for the basic plot setup alone: post-apocalyptic Vancouver's downtown core is swarming with criminals, gangs, and people just trying to survive. A ragtag group of friends working at the KlonDyke is that not the single greatest name for a lesbian bar??

I expected lots of action and badassery from everyone involved, but I didn't expect this book to tug at my heart the way it did. This is one of those books that sticks with you. Words are failing me at this point, but the layers of beauty in this lovely book are breathtaking. They are full, well-rounded, beautiful people who just happen to be queer. Unfortunately transphobia hasn't been eradicated in this future, considering how much flak the one trans character in the book is given by both her friends and by strangers. That churned my stomach more than a little. This is a book I'll read again, I can say that with no hesitation. I'm grateful my monthly library newsletter recommended this one, as it really is unforgettable. Oct 11, Michael rated it it was amazing. McMahon is a master at letting a story unfold. The way she moves from one character's perspective to another's eliminates all sense of "telling.

Detailed, wide-ranging research of everything from technologies to places is evident throughout. The story line is jagged, taking twists and turns, just as one would expect in a world that has not yet achieved equilibrium after rapid environmental change and social disintegration.
